The purpose of the Finnish Research Foundation for Orthopaedics and Traumatology is to carry out and support scientific research on the field of orthopaedics and traumatology. The Foundation grants scholarships for scientific research and promotes development of treatment methods for orthopaedic diseases, injuries, and disorders and also encourages scientific research on traumatology.

The Research Foundation for Orthopaedics and Traumatology was founded on June 15, 1972. The charter for the Foundation was signed by Master of Laws Chr. von Frenckell, professor Anders Langenskiöld, Master of Laws Håkan Lindbergh, Attorney General Sakari Sohlberg and Director-general Mika Tiivola. The Ministry of Justice, Finland, approved the rules of the Foundation on December 22, 1972. The Foundation started its activities after May 8, 1973, when the Foundation was marked on the Finnish register of foundations.

The Foundation has a 12-member Board of Directors, 5-member board and a representative.

The Foundation grants scholarships every year for scientific research work. The scholarships are primarily awarded for dissertation research. The scholarships are given at the Annual Meeting of the Finnish Orthopaedic Association.

The Research Foundation for Orthopaedics and Traumatology accepts donations, bequeathed property and financial support for special aims and carrying out the purpose of the foundation.
